Mark Allen
made his mark on World Snooker
last season in the World
Championships beating Ken
Doherty in the first round.
This year round he has qualified
yet again thanks to a hard
fought 10-8 victory over Ricky
Walden. |
The
Ex- World and European Amateur
Champion from Antrim, Northern
Ireland has made great strides over
the past three seasons on the tour
and this win could now propel him
towards a possible Top 16 place. The
youngster lost out in the Last 16
last season to Matthew Stevens and
will be hoping for a kind draw this
year round to try improve on last
years debut performance.
His
match against Walden was a quick
fire affair with both players
knocking in the breaks to share the
first six frames. Allen had breaks
of 64 and 87 while Walden responded
with 71, 73 and 78. Allen then
stretched his lead to 7-3 thanks to
efforts of 91 and 72 but Walden
again fought back with efforts of 86
and 82 to get bac k to 7-6.
Allen
was looking good at 9-7 before
Walden gave him something to think
about with a 65 in the next frame
but a superb 104 closed out the
match for Allen as he booked his
place in April's showcase event.
In
the other matches of the day Stuart
Bingham reached the Last 32 for the
first time in six years
beating Adrian Gunnell 10-3 with
ease with top runs of 90 and 74 on
the day.
Nigel Bond defeated Barry Pinches
10-7 in one of the scrappiest
matches of the day with Bond
knocking in the highest break of the
day, a surprising 48.
In
the last match Mark Davis saw Gerard
Greene take the first two frames of
the day only to respond by taking
the next 10 frames in a row to take
the match in style with a high break
of 137.
