Fernandez storms ahead in Irish Rankings

14.12.2008

Midday in Carlow on Saturday Mario Fernandez was looking like taking an early trip home to Limerick but come Sunday evening he had just picked up his second event in a row to take a commanding lead in the Irish Rankings. Mario's club mate Thomas Hickey had the brown to beat Mario 3-0 jump back out of the pocket in their Last 64 round encounter. Mario like a true champion then recovered to win 3-2 and storm through the event nearly knocking in a max along the way.

Being let off the hook on Saturday proved to be the spur that Mario needed as he produced some superb snooker to reach the latter stages of the event. Mario had 3-1 victories over Marty Hayden and George Tierney in the Last 32 and 16 before defeating Keith Sheldrick 4-0 missing the 147 break on the pink along the way.

Stiffer opposition waited in the form of David Hogan in the semi finals with Hogan back to winning ways after a slow start to the season. Hogan had been in fine form beating Martin McCrudden, TJ Dowling and Brendan O'Donoghue to get to the semi's. Mario however just edged that match 4-3 to reach his third final in a row this season. The other semi final had just seen Robert Murphy overcome youngster Greg Casey 4-2 but Murphy had no answer for Fernandez as the Limerick player ran out a comprehensive 5-1 victor of the Presidents Cup Ranking Event on the day to take a huge lead at the top of the rankings from Murphy.

Robert Redmond picked up the high break with a superb 143 in the early rounds of the event.
