Hendry overcomes Allen 10-9

21.04.2008

Stephen Hendry had trailed the Antrim youngster through most of this superb match but at the end of the day experience shone through as Hendry rolled back the years to reach the second round.

The seven time champion trailed by six frames to three coming into today's play but took the first three frames of the day to get himself back in contention.

At 6-6 Allen responded with breaks of 47 and 89 to take the next two frames and regain the lead. A 65 break got Hendry back to 8-7 down but when Allen took the next frame with a 56 the match looked all but over for the Crucible legend.

However experience came to the fore and Hendry pounced on errors by Allen in the next three frames to take the match 10-9. Hendry now faces either Ding or Marco Fu in the next round after being let off the hook by the Northern Ireland youngster today.

In other matches Stuart Bingham ended Steve Davis hopes of a run in this years event beating the six time champion 10-8 and now faces the winner of Dott and Perry in the next round.

Another match to end today was that of Day v's Judge with Day running out a 10-6 victor and Judge will rue a missed 147 opportunity in the third last frame which could have given the Irishman a nice payday. He wasn't the only one today that will rue missed opportunity's as Mark King missed the last red for the max to go 3-3 with Selby. The match finished today at 5-4 to Selby although Mark Williams is having an easier run in the first round as he currently leads Mark Davis 8-1 at present.
