Ding wins the battle of china

22.04.2008

Ding Jun Hui overcame Marco Fu 10-9 today to set up a match with Stephen Hendry in the Last 16. The top two Chinese hopeful's would have preferred to have met later on in the event but they sure served up a feast of snooker for China to be proud of today. 12 breaks over 50 and no less than 4 centuries in a superb match in which the favorite Ding came out on top. Ding had already established a 5-4 lead coming into today's final sessions over the China Hong Kong player Fu with both players on top form after knocking in two century's a piece yesterday. Fu then opened well today with a break of 97 to level the scores and then took the lead winning the 11th frame.

Ding Leveled again but a 49 by Fu put him into 7-6 lead at the mid session interval. Ding took the next two frames with breaks of 97 and 114 but then lost the next to level things once more. The next two frames were shared but at 9-9 Ding took the game into his own hands and compiled a 76 break to see out the match.

One shock today was the loss of many peoples favorite for this years championships in Mark Selby. Selby led 5-4 going into today's match but King rattled off four frames in a row in the first session to take a commanding lead. Selby fought back to 8-7 thanks to breaks of 40 and 108 in the next two frames but King responded with a 116 to stretch his lead again. Selby clawed one back to 9-8 but a 71 in the final frame sent King through to the Last 16 where he will meet Ali Carter.

In other matches Joe Perry holds a slim advantage over ex- champion Graham Dott with a top break of 102 in the 5th frame of the day. Shaun Murphy however is finding things slightly easier against Dave Harold in their encounter and leads 7-2 going into tomorrow's session.
