Perry edges out McGuire for semi spot

30.04.2008

Joe Perry reached the semi finals with a superb final frame win over Stephen McGuire and will now face Ali Carter to reach the final of the World's. Perry started the match in superb fashion going 4-0 ahead only for McGuire to draw level at 4-4. Today's sessions saw both players more evenly matched with McGuire leading 12-11 going into the final frames. A 38 and 54 however from Perry were enough to see him through to the semi's after a long days play.

Ali Carter also overcame the odds to defeat Peter Ebdon in magnificent quarter final encounter in which we witnessed one maximum and should have seen two. Carter's 147 helped him to a 13-9 victory over the ex-champion and guarantees one debut performance in this years final where Carter or Perry will face either the world's greatest winner or the world's most natural player.

Who's the greatest has been debated over the years but this match up should help us decide that for ourselves with both players in superb form. Hendry defeated Ryan Day 13-7 after Ryan failed to make up for a devastating 7-1 first session defeat. Ryan did pick up several frames near the end but it was only to make the score somewhat respectable and the seven time champion will now face Ronnie O'Sullivan in the semi's

Ronnie had drawn 4-4 with young Liang Wenbo in the first session of the match but a 76, 67, 56, 52, 57, 138 and 86 helped Ronnie run away with the next six frames and led 11-5 at the break. Wenbo managed to get a couple back to 12-7 but Ronnie took the final frame with a 79 to end the match and progress.
