England's Stephen Craigie took home the European Under-19 Champions Title on Thursday night defeating home favorite Anthony McGill 6-2 in the final. Craigie will now be nominated by
the EBSA for the 2008/09 WSA Main Tour adding to the exciting pool of youngsters now making up the professional ranks. |
The event saw 64 players from across Europe battle it out for the prestigious title as well as a main tour nomination in the superb Craigpark Masters snooker club in Glasgow, Scotland. The
event started on Sunday last with three days of group stages before the Last 32 was decided.
The big four of Muldoon, Duffy, McGill and Craigie were many peoples favorites for the semi final line up and come Thursday morning the line up was confirmed. Craigie the eventual champion
however had a big scare in the Last 8 with England's Stuart Carrington leading 4-3 until Craigie managed to get back into the match and get over the winning line taking the match 5-4.
With Vincent Muldoon reaching the final the last two years Craigie would have it all to do but after Muldoon lost the first frame Craigie seemed to hold the advantage and went 4-0 up
albeit in some very close frames. The final frame however saw Craigie shine knocking in a superb 118 break. With McGill defeating Duffy 5-2 in the other semi final the final was set and the Scottish supporters were out in
force for McGill.
McGill had been the man on form all week compiling breaks of 140, 135 and two 103 breaks along the way but it was Craigie who made the final his own going 4-0 ahead. McGill clawed one back
only for Craigie to win the next to leave him one frame from victory. McGill got another one on the board before the final frame which saw Craigie run out a 64-1 winner to take the match and title of European Under-19
Champion.
Craigie will now be nominated for the professional place by the EBSA and will join the numerous youngsters now plying their trade on the tour.
