World Snooker, the commercial arm of the World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association, has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with online
betting exchange Betfair to enable the sharing of information relating to unusual betting activity on snooker matches.
World Snooker is already a signatory to Integrity in Sports Betting – A 10 Part Plan, and has had a similar co-operation agreement in place with the
Association of British Bookmakers since 2005. |
The agreement with Betfair follows an investigation by the UK Gambling Commission earlier this week into snooker match involving Peter Ebdon and Liang Wenbo in August. A number of
bookmakers contacted snooker's governing body after the match to report suspicious betting activity during the game.
Sir Rodney Walker, World Snooker’s Chairman, said: “Entering into such agreements and establishing relationships within the betting industry is an
important, necessary step for World Snooker to take and these links facilitate our gathering of information to assist in any enquiries. I am pleased to have been able to negotiate
this additional agreement with Betfair which will reinforce snooker’s continued commitment to preserve the integrity and transparency of our sport.”
Mark Davies of Betfair added: "Betfair works closely with sporting regulators worldwide to help them maintain the integrity of their sports and ensure
that competitors abide by the rules they have in place. This agreement key in allowing us to provide named information where necessary, without which regulators cannot do their effectively." |
